Get ready for a gush-filled episode review. It wasn't perfect but by far my favorite episode of Chuck since 3.09 "Chuck vs the Beard". If there are more episodes like this one, I will change my mind about being against S4 getting a full episode order from NBC.
Casey and Awesome are the two characters that make the show for me. That's why I've been down on season 4 so far because both have taken a back seat for Chuck/Sarah relationship issues & Chuck/Mom relationship issues (see what I did there). And while I wasn't really satisfied with last week's Awesome/Ellie episode that really didn't use them that much I was thrilled that Casey was a big part of this episode after weeks of being relegated to behind the scenes ops while Chuck and Sarah acted like a two-man team instead of the three-man group (four if you count Morgan).
The moments between Casey and Morgan reminded me of season 1/2 Chuck when it was Chuck that was the bumbling, good-meaning subordinate. Morgan trying to deliver a eulogy for Casey and the looks Casey gave him from the casket were great but that was only the appetizer to the full-on glare-face Casey delivered to Morgan when Morgan revealed he was dating Alex to anger Casey enough to move. HILARIOUS MOMENT.
Also even Jeff and Lester were used perfectly in the small appearance of picking up Casey and thinking he was drugged out of his mind (he was but not the kind they were thinking). Again, HILARIOUS MOMENT.
And the best thing was that while the whole Volkov/Frost/Chuck search for his mom instigated the episode, it took a backseat to Casey's situation, Morgan's dilemma and Chuck had a moment of clarity on what the search was doing to those around him. I still have no interest at all in this plot but it didn't help that NBC spoiled the ending of this episode with last week's preview of "AND IN 2 WEEKS CHUCK MEETS HIS MOM" so I called aloud right when he told Sarah he was stopping the search that "this is the moment Chuck's mom shows up" and what happened? She rang his phone.
