emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (chloe sullivan)

It feels like a lifetime since "Reckoning", which as episode 100 is probably a decent marker for the end of the golden years of Smaliville. Would "Homecoming" be as lasting for the final season?

I'll start with the only negatives I had for this episode, and it's the first time I've felt this way about a Smallville episode but Lois felt out of place and intruding on an event she had no true ownership. Despite the dialogue written, she didn't belong and the alums not recognizing her felt more meta than the writers probably intended. Every Lois scene either felt like that or like what is plaguing Chuck in that the relationship took way too much precedence for the story. She shouldn't have been in the episode.

The flashbacks were a perfect touch to the episode, and I got a little teary-eyed when Clark stumbled and remembered doing that in front of Lana in the pilot and then going to the Torch and remembering Chloe introducing him to the Wall of Weird. I would've liked to have seen a Pete scene, maybe a Lex scene and some other memorable moments like when Clark was caught in the school pool with Lana, or when Clark flamed up in Biology class. The flashbacks were great, as was Clark seeing scenes from "Reckoning" in a new perspective, seeing his dad fight Lionel but they did emphasize what the show was lacking. No Pete cameo, or Lana (I knew the Krypto!suit but they could work around that besides "she's not coming") and even knowing it ahead of time it was sad not to have Chloe for an episode focused on their high school days. Also it was sad to see the Torch reduced to cloud status and that it seemed to be mostly tabloid based now because while Chloe would write up the freak of the weeks she also went after hard-hitting stories.

The best part of the episode might have been James Marsters return as Brainiac. I was wondering how they were going to handle that and when he revealed the Legion ring and that he was called Brainiac 5 in the future my mind was blown. What a perfect explanation of how he could be back, and it was so awesome to have a helpful Brainiac, I almost wish he was around for the rest of the season to guide Kal-El (him in person and Jonathan Kent in dreamland would be kick-ass).

The future bits are a nice diversion but I hope Smallville doesn't go to the well too many times. I think the best part of the future scenes was Clark meeting Clark, although the slicked back hair reminded me too much of Dean Cain than what I think of Clark Kent. I know we didn't see Superman outside of some blurs (ha see what I did there) but I miss the curly S hair aspect to the character.

Not about the episode but just wanted to say that I finally recognized Ryan Kennedy (Rokk Krin) on Hellcats. People can look so different when in a new environment. Surprised me even though I knew in the back of my head that he was going to be on the show.
