I've been horribly busy and creatively dry the last 3 weeks so I apologize in advance to everyone if everything goes well and your flists are deluded with posts this weekend. :)

Since the day they met, Lois Lane had an effortless ability of turning Clark Kent's belongings into possessions for her own use without seeming greedy or inconsiderate. It was so subtle at times that Clark didn't even notice that Lois had wormed her way into areas that were once upon a time only for Clark Kent.

It started with those plaid shirts he would wear so often during his days at Smallville High. The first time it happened, Lois merely needed a top to wear after getting cleaned up from a morning altercation with some armed thugs and with her clothes being washed it was easier to just borrow something of Clark's. The fact that the woolen cloth was warm and soft against her moist skin at the time and that her continuing to wear it always put that strange look on Clark's face that was amusing to look at were just bonuses.

Lois' next conquest happened to be the Kent home and the family atmosphere she was never exposed to before arriving in Smallville. She didn't have a place to stay when she first appeared in town so the Kents generously let her stay in Clark's room while he became familiar with the couch downstairs. The Kents gained a daughter they never had while Lois soaked up the compassion and guidance that she wasn't used to receiving. Clark acted a bit standoffish towards her at first, but Lois didn't let his attitude ruffle her feathers one bit, giving him healthy doses of her witty sass on a daily basis. She'd win him over eventually whether he liked it or not.

When their days started to involve the Daily Planet, there was already a level of comfort between them that stood out like a sore thumb when compared to the rest of their coworkers. Having the longer tenure as a reporter, Lois acted like the top dog, which wasn't much different from any other aspect of their relationship so Clark wasn't surprised. He took it in stride when she started drinking from the coffee he would bring in and take a bite out of his bear claw. It didn't take long for him to start bringing two coffees in the morning – one made the way she liked it – but he still only brought one bear claw. He didn't mind her bites.

That's how Lois found herself sitting alone at a table in an empty banquet hall where earlier that night she and Clark had received their first Kerth award not being able to take her eyes off the new ring on her finger. She'd like to say it was a surprise; she pretended not to notice the extra fidgeting Clark had been doing around the office the last few weeks or his attempts at hiding the ring box in his sock drawer thinking she'd never look in there. Instead she felt a pleasant flutter in her heart when Clark went down on one knee and asked her to marry him in front of Chloe, his mom, Lucy and her dad as they were prepping to leave the hall for the Italian restaurant near their apartment for a celebration dinner.

“Ready, Lois?”

She turned to see Clark standing by the door, smiling that special way just for her. And it became clear to her that even on a night where she received an award that would give her professional respect, it paled in comparison to an award that back in those early Smallville days she never imagined she would want or care to have, Clark's confirmation that she held his heart.

"I am," she said, smiling back at Clark.

It truly was their night. A night they would share forever.
